The After Cesarean Underwear That Heals and Slims
Catherine Brooks is the CEO and founder of C-Panty, The After Cesarean Underwear™, which is specifically designed to address post-Cesarean concerns including scarring, swelling, sensitivity and discomfort. Designed by a three-time C-section mom and MD surgeon team, considering both clinical recovery factors and what C-moms want, the concept of C-Panty is a pull-on and go recovery option for moms to deal with c-section recovery. In addition, these panties offer a hint of post-baby slimming for those who want it. C-Panty is unique from other post-pregnancy undergarments on the market because it is the only product that integrates both scar management and edema (swelling control). Not only that, but it is also the only product that is normal clothing so that moms can easily use it as a pull-on and go product without feeling uncomfortably restricted. Catherine knows that wounds and surgical recovery lasts 3-12 months and moms do not have all that time to use special equipment that is time or labor intensive. Made in the USA, C-Panty currently offers three products; Classic Incision Care, Tummy Cut Incision Care, and Incision Shaper.
The C-Panty collection offers two panty styles with silicone, one for incision support for swelling, scar management and discomfort and one that addresses those things but integrates abdominal support for fluid retention and post-partum support. C-Panty works by using a compression and interior silicone panel localized to the incision area in order to minimize scar formation, promote comfort and provide incision area body shaping and compression. Silicone, commonly used in burn and other post-surgical rehab, helps increase moisture in the incision area while the compression discourages swelling, assists in organizing collagen formation and provides support to the area. These techniques, known as scar management, also helps address the pain, itching, discomfort and scar volume during recovery1. Moms can start using C-panty after the surface wound is healed and there is no scab no remaining (approximately one week), with a doctor’s approval.
The Incision Care Starter 2-Pack is a must for all moms or moms-to-be because it comes with everything that you will need in terms of recovering after a c-section. This pack comes with the Classic Cut and Tummy Cut. Both panties have a silicone panel made with Silon-TEX, localized to the C-section incision to increase moisture content and help with scarring, itching, and other symptoms. The Classic Cut offers mild compression in a classic cut panty that is ideal for wearing from delivery to six months. This essential panty will provide less swelling, which means more comfort and is seamless with a low rise. Not a granny panty but also offering enough coverage and support, you cannot go wrong with a few pairs of these. The Tummy Cut offers moderate compression and has a higher fluted waistband that is non-binding so that moms avoid any discomfort or tightness. This higher cut panty offers more post-baby slimming and is best when work from week one to one year. It is seamless and cuts just below the ribs with a full rear and a gentle waistband. Tummy Cut is also available without silicone for non C-moms as this is the modern mom’s way to hide post-baby belly. Say goodbye to bulky binders as this cut soothes and protects the midsection from irritating waistbands and can be worn seamlessly under jeans, pants, skirts, and more. They both offer supportive compression to control swelling in addition to postpartum tummy shaping.
From personal experience, Catherine found herself on the surprise end of a scalpel for her firstborn. Her husband is a surgeon, and she herself had worked in post-op rehab as a therapist, so they both assumed there was a product to address swelling, scarring, and general recovery after a cesarean. To their surprise, no such product existed and Catherine decided to solve this problem. She never intended to start a company, but it seemed crazy to her that 1.3 million c-section mothers were returning home in mesh panties with unaddressed swelling and no post-surgical help. She graduated from Utica College of Syracuse University and it was her background as an occupational and hand therapist and her work in wound care that led to the rationale for C-Panty. With her Masters in Public Health, she has a natural inclination to bring health to the masses. Catherine played around with a few prototypes, but it was key for her to create something that was an easy option for c-section moms since she knows compliance is directly related to how easy a recovery plan is to use. While moms might use a binder for a few weeks to address the abdomen, the major surgical site would remain ignored for most of the recovery since binders only support the tummy rather than incision area. “I think that since moms are so focused on the baby they forget themselves. We’re moms after all,” she says.
What most women don’t know is that although the surface incision is healed, changes underneath the skin go on much longer. Moms will benefit from daily use of C-Panty within the first month and throughout three to six months. Other support panties on the market provide all over compression leaving the weakest point, the incision area, unchecked, and applying too much pressure on this sensitive area. Neither binders nor compression panties provide the crucial clinical benefit of the skin contact silicone. C-Panty's patent pending design provides gentle, focused compression at the incision thus effecting recovery symptoms. C-Panty also provides recovery care and post-baby shaping without the bulk and on/off of a binder and without overly tight control panties. Even if your incision has healed well, C-Panty is a must because it will support and flatten the “c-shelf” bulge around the incision. For moms looking to reduce swelling and increase slimming, the Incision Shaper is the way to go. Meant to address mature, flat scars that also have a persistent “c-bulge,” this is best worn after three months from date of c-section. This seamless panty has a lower rise with a full rear and offers moderate compression without the silicone.
Catherine started her website and online store four years ago and filed the patent for C-Panty five years ago. Their first big national trade show was in 2009. Celebrity Tiffani Amber Thiessen visited the C-Panty booth at a tradeshow and has used C-Panty. Catherine named her line C-Panty after a lot of brainstorming and was a name that stuck with her. C-Panty is sold at popular maternity stores and websites such as Pea in the Pod, Destination Maternity, Diapers.com and many more independent maternity and baby retailers. In Los Angeles, every mother knows that the amazing Pump Station is the place to go for a wealth of knowledge on breastfeeding and maternity. C-Panty can also be found at the Pump Station locations and on their website.
As for the future, her goal is to bring C-Panty to as many C-moms as possible. While they could do that on their own, Catherine also sees the possibility of a licensing agreement or merger to help reduce costs and streamline efforts. She says, “three cesareans later, I still am sometimes surprised I delivered that way. Not that there is anything wrong with it, it is just not what I had expected. For the moms out there having c’s planned or unplanned, it is only the first of a million more sacrifices you make for your kids, all of them worth it.” As Catherine knows best, “Get back to taking care of baby in comfort with C-Panty.”
