Chan Luu Jewelry

A Creative Force with Raw Talent for Hand-made Jewelry and Fashion

Chan Luu JewelryChan Luu.  This name is one that everybody knows and a brand that is adored worldwide.  The designer herself, Chan Luu, began her jewelry and accessories line in 1996.  Known for her trademark artistry in combining organic shapes with contemporary ideas to create items that are unique, wearable, and hand-made, she creates beautiful yet natural pieces than can be worn by women of any age or cultural background.  Chan is especially known for her gorgeous wrap bracelets which come in an array of hand-cut semi-precious stones, sterling silver, gold vermeil, and custom dyed leathers.  Chan continues to be a trend leader in fashion today as her pieces have been featured in the top fashion magazines and have adorned Hollywood’s hottest celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria, Lady GaGa, Alexa Chung, Rihanna, and more.  Her recognizable pieces have been featured in Vogue, Elle, Glamour, Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, and more.  From modern or bohemian to simple and classic, Chan Luu jewelry offers something for every woman.

Originally raised in South Vietnam, Chan grew up in the city of Nha Trang as her parents were merchants.  While her parents were business saavy, her own calling was to be an artist in fashion or a painter.  Even as a little girl, her artistic talent was evident as she possessed a strong creativity with forms, shapes, and colors. She loved food and enjoyed doing things with her hands, which she was quite skilled at.  Although she had limited exposure to the western world growing up during the Vietnam War, she read and learned a great deal about European art in her French high school class.  In 1972, she moved to Boston and earned a B.A. in Business Administration from Boston University.  In 1975, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer by receiving a degree in Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.  Shortly thereafter she opened her own boutique in Rolling Hills Estates, carrying European designer clothing and accessories for women. She began designing her own accessories in 1996, marking the start of Chan Luu, Inc.

Chan Luu JewelryThe story behind her beaded creations all started with a freak skiing accident confining Chan to bed rest.  Out of boredom, she began toying with the idea of stringing beads together to make fun jewelry.  With no jewelry experience at all, this young fashion designer used her hands to skillfully create, triggering a strong passion to venture and test her own talent in the fashion design world.  Going back to the basics, one can never go wrong with the classic wrap bracelet that started it all.  Available in a variety of leather colors and stones or nuggets, these wrap bracelets are the original and handcrafted with the utmost quality and care in Vietnam.  We selected the Gold Vermeil Wrap Bracelet on Brown Leather as an Editor’s Pick because it is a classic that is versatile, stunning, and easy glam for any outfit or occasion.  This is a five wrap bracelet made of dark brown leather with gold vermeil plated nuggets strung throughout.  The closure features a gold vermemil Chan Luu engraved button to fit three adjustable closures to fit varying wrist sizes.  The glittering gold of the nuggets against the rustic deep brown is a classic that will never go out of style.

Chan Luu JewelryA piece showcasing Chan Luu’s gorgeous selection of semi-precious stones is the Angelite Mix Single Wrap Bracelet on Brown Leather.  This is a single wrap bracelet with angelite semi-precious stones in colors of soft blue, green, taupe and dark brown.  The natural hues of the angelite stones compliment the brown leather.  For those days when you want something simpler than a multiple layered wrap bracelet, this is just the piece to add a touch of color and style.  In 2004, Chan launched her Ready-To-Wear clothing collection, featuring hand-beaded and embroidered garments.  Chan Luu now Chan Luu Jewelryoffers clothing, handbags and accessories as well.  A year-round everyday essential is the Doeskin Cashmere and Silk Scarf, lightweight enough for the summer yet large enough to layer and wrap around for fall and winter.  The neutral light tan of the Doeskin color goes well with most outfits and is a classic for years to come.  Made of lightweight 70% cashmere, 30% silk, this scarf is silky soft against the skin and so easy to wear.  If looking for something brighter or with a pattern, Chan Luu offers a whole spectrum of colors, along with changing prints and motifs seasonally.

Chan Luu has manufacturing factories in Vietnam and India, but Chan enjoys working with villages as every village has a certain craft that especially reflects them.  Her pieces are created through many skilled hands and in working with villagers, her line of products “feeds and changes many lives.”  Chan is very much a people person and Chan Luu Jewelryenjoys learning about the people and their history and traditions within villages.  In addition to bracelets and earrings, Chan Luu’s raw talent is evident in her beautiful array of necklaces.  From tribal, cotton cord, and charm necklaces to statement and layering pieces, there are enough to suit a wide range of tastes and styles.  We selected the Pyrite Pendant Necklace because it is both elegant and eye-catching.  This stylish necklace features sparkling faceted pyrite stones all along a chain and a large faceted teardrop crystal pendant.  Suitable for any occasion, the long length of this necklace offers grace and elegance while the glittering pyrite beads give fashionable luxe appeal.

While she holds the position of CEO, Chan still designs everyday, with many designer assistants working under her.  Much of her inspiration comes from travel, as well as art history, cultures, and painting.  Chan Luu features five collections a year; Spring, Summer, Fall 1, Fall 2, and Holiday.  She resides in Los Angeles and her hobbies include tennis, scuba diving, gardening and cooking for friends.  Chan Luu is sold at department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, as well as online boutiques and international high-end stores.  Whether your style is modern, bohemian, or simple and classic, Chan Luu jewelry gives every woman the perfect tools to create their own fashion canvas.
