Herndon Heald

Herndon Heald

Handmade Paillettes of Silver, Gold and Rose

Herndon HealdJeri Lynn Heald Ingram and Mark and Naomi Herndon started Herndon Heald back in 2006.

Jeri Lynn and Naomi were doing private label jewelry designs for companies and getting burnt out making stuff they did not like.  Since they liked each other’s styles and both felt ready to be working on their own terms, starting a business together felt right.  When these three metalsmiths got together to share their ideas and techniques, it was unbeatable match.  Their style of jewelry is best described as “high karat gold all the way.”  Herndon Heald has been featured in national fashion magazines such as InStyle, Glamour, SHAPE, Lucky Magazine, Sundance Catalog, and more.  Herndon Heald has been spotted on top Hollywood trendsetters like Cameron Diaz, Megan Fox, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, and others.  Naomi describes their style as “hand forged, fashionable, heirlooms.”  As for materials, Jeri Lynn loves 22k gold and Naomi prefers high karat gold, as well as steel.  Naomi simply loves the hardness of copper and its patinas of colors.

As for creativity, Jeri Lynn always dabbled in crafty things, but mostly experiences life as one big creative project.  Now that she has a daughter, a lot of creativity is channeled in that direction. Jeri Lynn comes from a big Texas family with a lot of women and from her childhood remembers being fascinated with how women can be so different from one another and how they often expressed those differences through fashion.  Naomi, on the other hand, always somewhat knew she would make jewelry as she has been around it most of her life since her grandparents sold traditional Native American turquoise jewelry.  As a child, Naomi always drew and fancied herself a novelist as she wrote her first book in 2nd grade.  The book was about unicorns, and even though she basically plagiarized a movie she has just seen, her mom thought it was great.  While Naomi never told her mom the story behind the book, she basically kept drawing a lot of horses and unicorns.

Herndon HealdCelebrities are no stranger to Herndon Heald as Cameron Diaz wore the Satellite Ring on the red carpet. Instantly everyone picked up that image and it was a wonderful moment for the brand because she looked effortlessly stunning with the ring.  This is one of their best selling rings as a brushed sterling silver hand-hammered concave disc sits atop an organic band.  While Jeri Lynn was an American Studies major at the University of Texas, it was in college that she started making jewelry. She later apprenticed with a goldsmith in Santa Fe.  Naomi studied art at Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C., where she met her husband and technical advisor, Mark.  Naomi wakes up daily and can’t believe her luck because she feels really lucky to have such a charmed life and do what she loves with her best friends.  Her father was not born here and her mother picked onions and cotton as a child.  Her grandparents didn’t speak English and worked hard labor jobs.  When she thinks about their struggles, it makes her work harder everyday as she feels so immensely blessed in her life.

Herndon Heald is unique from other jewelry designers because all three metalsmiths can design and make the jewelry.  “We all have different strengths and that has given our jewelry a certain temperament,” Jeri Lynn says.  Naomi adds, “with us you get, three for the price of one as there are three of us working together so you can see the Native American, Mughal and Mexican influences.”  From Mark’s blacksmithing background and Jeri Lynn’s need to wear big earrings and really long necklaces to Naomi’s need to layer more and more jewelry, it all works.   While some designers present a specific point of view, Herndon Heald is all about “uniqueness” as they are literally a melting pot of influences between the three of them.  Their collection evolves over the year as tried-and-true pieces stay while new items are added to replace discontinued pieces that do not sell.

Herndon HealdJeri Lynn shares her favorites, starting with her 22k gold 36” Rain Necklace she wears all the time.  She also loves the black version of this necklace as it really makes a statement.  We selected the silver version of this as an Editor’s Pick for its easy versatility and quality craftsmanship.  This sterling silver chain features hand-hammered sterling paillettes shimmering all around.  You cannot help but feel special as this adorns your neckline.  For bracelets, Jeri Lynn has always liked the New Moon Mini Cuffs with all the metals stacking together and their new Blackened Shield Cuff.  Jeri Lynn adores the Large New Moon Hoops to adorn her lobes.  As for rings, she likes the Gold Organic Sea to Sky Stack Rings as she often wears them together.

For Jeri Lynn, inspiration comes from everywhere and she enjoys seeing what happens to an idea once the three of them have worked on it. Naomi, Mark, and Jeri Lynn all collaborate on design ideas.  While they all make jewelry, they also have 3 metal smiths working alongside them.  With ideas, Naomi gets hers from what she wants to wear next.  At the moment she is really into using raw, rough stones to promote their raw beauty because she is starting to learn more about stone properties and the meaning of gemstones.  Naomi is a traveler and says, “every place is influential just in a different way” as she picked up customs from each country.  She always wear scarves because of the time she spent in Paris and pays close attention to achieving flawless skin, from seeing the women in Hong Kong.  Jeri Lynn also loves to travel and considers them her most significant inspiration.  Her year in Prague changed the world for her as she met her husband there.  She adds, “It was that year, inspired by blackened statues with bits of gleaming gold, of spires and cobblestones, of art nouveau details, that I committed myself to learning how to make the designs I envisioned.  When I returned, I apprenticed with a goldsmith and met the Herndons shortly thereafter.”

Herndon HealdFor Naomi, she starts her favorites off with the large New Moon Hoops in silver or gold, since she loves gold.  This is another one of our Editor’s Picks as it is elegant and seductive with its hand forged 18k yellow gold detailed hoops.  These go great with any outfit and can compliment a daytime look or evening event.  She likes mixing her Cascade Bracelet with the Maya Bracelet, Ladder Bracelet and African Beaded Necklace wrapped around her wrist like a bracelet.  With necklaces, she wears the Stream of Sapphires Necklace short 16” with an 18” Rain Necklace and 26” Oxidized Talisman Ruby Necklace.  “I make this stuff because I want to wear it, and I do wear it, and its made to mix and match and layer so picking favorites is hard for me,” Naomi shares.

Herndon HealdWe also selected the Rain Hoops as an Editor’s Pick for its unique design and modern style.   These paillette hoops are made of 14k rose gold that shimmer and dance when worn.  Available in small, medium, and large, there is a size that will suit everyone.  The captivating design of these dangly hoops with the soft color of the rose gold adds to its allure and is sure to be noticed wherever you go.  In her free time, Jeri Lynn loves traveling, jumping in swimming holes, and listening to live music.  Naomi enjoys going for walks or house hunting, in addition to drinking wine, eating great food, having people over and watching “really bad movies.”  In the next five years, they hope to see Herndon Heald in a place where they can focus more on designs, which will mature as they do, and less on business operations.  Naomi hopes the economy improves so that gold and silver prices will drop and allow for them to have a strong and steady stable of fine stores and galleries to stock their latest creations.  As for the business side, she hope to get a CEO with experience in running the business and a great sales team to takeover so that the three designers can spend more time in the studio and less time on the computer.

Herndon Heald is extremely active within their community as they do different events around the Institute for American Indian Arts where Mark works.  They also work with IF in having kids battling cancer visit their studio for workshops on making cuff bracelets out of copper and allowing them to hammer metal and enjoy the freeing experience.  Herndon Heald is sold a boutiques nationwide and are especially strong at stores which promote hand crafted and well designed goods.  Some of stores include Eliza Page in Austin, the Silverado in Oregon, or Katy Beh in New Orleans.  Visit their website and online store to get your own handmade and artistically crafted wearable works of art.
