Jennifer Tuton Jewelry

Irresistible Collections Offering Both Classic and Bling

Jennifer Tuton JewelryBased in San Francisco, Jennifer Tuton Jewelry offers s combination of various styles, as her pieces are very feminine and delicate but also trendy, contemporary, and classic with a twist.  Designer and creator, Jennifer Tuton, offers two different sides of the sales spectrum with her two diverse but fabulous jewelry lines.  Her original Jennifer Tuton line is the bread and butter of her business, but her new Gem of The Universe line is her indulgence as its pieces are considerably more expensive, but are classic keepsakes.  Each piece in her line is handmade in San Francisco while her higher end line is fabricated in Thailand.  Her favorite materials to work with are gold, especially 18k gold and precious gems.  She prefers working with yellow gold since it looks great on everyone, compliments gemstones nicely, and is simply luxurious.  Jennifer takes custom orders and can create pieces in sterling silver and white or rose gold upon request.  She prides herself on having a piece for everyone so she does not exclude any metal.

Jennifer graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a B.A. in Psychology.  While she did not study art or design in college, she pursued psychology because she was always told she was a good therapist and problem solver. After graduating and working for a prestigious Boston advertising agency for three years, she could no longer fight her urge for a more creative career.  “I don’t think I fully acknowledged my creative talents and abilities until after college or that I could use them to start my own business since they seemed mostly like hobbies at that time,” Jennifer shares.  After what seemed like the biggest decision of her life then, she resigned and juggled a series of part-time jobs.  One of those jobs was hand painting barrettes using toothpicks, which she called “Jenniclips.”  As she designed every hair clip imaginable from sparkly bobby pins and hand painted barrettes to crystal wrapped clips and ornate ponytail holders, her business was born. This led Jennifer to ask herself “what else can I make?” which guided her to jewelry making.   Her jewelry line quickly evolved when she moved from Boston to San Francisco in 1998 and her Crystal Cluster Ring was featured in In Style Magazine shortly thereafter.  To this day, her business is constantly shifting, changing and unraveling and Jennifer looks forward to what comes next.

She was expressing her creativity even at the age of three when she drew on her sister’s bed sheets.  In kindergarten, she was recognized for her watercolor paintings of trees and since then, Jennifer has always had a passion for combining colors; colors next to colors that are often unexpected, yet pleasing to the eye.  While Jennifer knows there is a lot of beautiful jewelry out there, she thinks what makes her line a tad different is the energy behind her designs.  “The way I pair colors of gemstones, or hammer the’s me.  Even if two or more designers are making the same style piece, they’re all different because we’re all different...we add bits ourselves to our creations,” she adds.

Jennifer Tuton JewelryOur Editor’s Pick begins with the Key Charm Necklace in 14k yellow gold as it is the perfect dainty keepsake piece to wear everyday.  The design of this gold scrolled key is simple without any ornate frills and accents, adding to its complimentary nature in layering with other necklaces.  Measuring 1”, the key charm itself is the ideal size as it is noticeable without being loud.  Jennifer has a hard time using the expression “costume jewelry,” because it seems like so much more than that as she wants them to be pretty and wearable.  “When someone buys a piece of my jewelry they smile, it brightens their being....that’s what I’m interested in,” she says.  She also loves giving back as often as she can and donates quite a bit of jewelry each year to different charities or fundraisers such as Dress for Success, Special Olympics, St. Luke's Hospital, and to local schools and family service agencies.

Jennifer likes to live in the present rather than the future and simply enjoy the moment by following the energy that life brings instead of making big plans.  Ultimately, her vision is to expand her business by hiring more people, having both her lines sold in more stores, and creating more of an online presence with her website.  At the moment, she finds it has been a wonderful experience to see her potency unravel as her business does too.  As for throwing out big names who wear her pieces, Jennifer cares more about real people such as the everyday woman that buys her jewelry, because that means something to her.  She used to be consumed with celebrities wearing her jewelry and while she sent more samples to more actresses, a few such as Hilary Swank and Jackie Warner have worn them.  When her customers go up to her and share how many pieces they have of her collection, it fuels her fire because those are the women that Jennifer designs for.

Jennifer Tuton JewelryThe designer is quite fond of a lot of her designs and especially anything with a sparkly gemstone on it.  She thinks her Long Multi Gem Waterfall Earrings are pretty since they are ornate and twinkle with the light.  “They have a casual elegance and can be worn during the day or at an evening event,” she exclaims.  Jennifer has a few long necklaces she considers her “staples” from her Simple n Chic collection since they can be worn long, doubled, or layered with other pieces.  She loves that these long necklaces are clean and classic and never go out of style.  As an Jennifer Tuton Jewelryexample, her Multi Disc Necklace has been a hot selling piece for the last five years.  When she pulls it out to show a customer, it still looks as fresh and chic as it did years ago.  She loves women who are layering their jewelry and offers lots of necklaces that are long but can be doubled to offer the “layering” effect with total ease.  We too love her long necklaces and selected the Floating Clover Necklace as an Editor’s Pick.  This gorgeous piece features textured gold clovers on a 24k gold overlay chain, which can be worn long or double up for a layered look.  The beautiful golden clover silhouettes are reminiscent of Van Cleef & Arpels signature style but with a modern edge.  The necklace is versatile for any woman’s wardrobe and the charming clovers add a touch of femininity.

While Jennifer finds herself fortunate to have a few amazing women who share her vision for detail and precision in helping assemble creations, she still works very closely in creating each piece.  It is challenging for her to completely let go of the “hands on” aspect of constructing her jewelry since she also gets inspiration and new ideas as she creates each piece.  Her ideas flow forth from everything around her.  Designers like Missoni, with their patterns and colors or artists like Pollack with his chaos of paint that actually hold intention, stimulates her mind to think differently.  She has been told her new Bauble Earrings, which resemble oversized pieces of candy, have a Chanel vibe to them.  Jennifer also keeps in touch with what is “out there” like runway shows, local boutique displays and her own fashion sense.  She shares, “I have an awareness of what people want and then I ask questions to be able to generate the design.  I like to create pieces in all price ranges and quality to be top notch.  My target is to have a piece for everyone:  the trend setter, the mom, the bride, the best friend, etc.”

Her other favorites which she deeply cherishes are pieces from her higher end fine jewelry line called Gem of the Universe.  For Jennifer, it is truly a dream come true and a real gift to be able to generate her fine jewelry line because the gems and diamonds are luscious and set in 18K gold.  She has mostly created rings as she loves them so much and her goal is to have her Gem of the Universe line be special yet wearable.  “No more waiting for that special occasion to wear a 10 karat Fancy Jennifer Tuton JewelryZircon Ring with diamonds.  Everyday should be a celebration,” she says.  From this fine jewelry line, the Diamond Initial Necklace was selected as our magazine favorite because it is perfect for gifting yourself or others with a personalized touch.  A shiny 14k wafer thin disc displays your initial of choice in dazzling and sparkly diamonds.  These sweet pendants measure a little over ¼” and are petite in their size but showcase each initial with bright white diamonds.  Her purpose was to make a higher end version of her hand stamped initials that were subtle and elegant.

Jennifer Tuton Jewelry can be found in boutiques around the San Francisco Bay area, with fashionable shops selling stylish and trendy clothing being some of her best selling stores.  Some top stores which carry her line are Two Skirts on Chestnut Street, Heidi Says on Fillmore Street, and Waterlilies Swimwear Boutique on Sacramento Street. She makes a lot of personal appearances for trunk shows at private homes, charity events and spas.  She loves getting in front of people that want to wear her designs because each piece comes alive differently on each person.  Jennifer finds it truly exciting and never boring and loves complimenting them on a gorgeous necklace or pair of earrings.  Jennifer is a huge fan of art deco pieces, vintage brooches, over-the-top gem encrusted jewelry, Ippolita, Gurhan, and anything in the jewelry displays at Barneys New York. Decadence, liveliness and elegance are her turn-ons.  In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys yoga as a way to unwind and also get her creative juices flowing, in addition to spending time with close friends.

Jennifer Tuton JewelryJennifer is always adding new pieces to her line but even though seasons and colors change, she likes to keep her basic pieces going year after year so that her customers can keep adding to what they currently own.  She always encourages people to do what is in their heart because when they do, it will open the universe to shower a multitude of other possibilities. Her advice is to find the one thing you do with ease that you don’t think anything of and start there.  As a kid from Boston that did not want to work for someone else, through the years she uncovered a talent and ability that she did not even attend school for.  Jennifer enjoys going to work and is never bored because she keeps asking what it will take to expand her business and what steps she needs to make as “I’m amazed at how my business has grown and all the twists and turns it’s taken.”
