Milk Nursingwear

Milk Nursingwear

Fashionable, Fabulous Nursing Clothes for Everyday

Milk NursingwearAny mother of a newborn knows that nursing is of utmost importance and that is exactly why having the right clothes to help facilitate nursing makes life so much easier.  Launched in 2009, Milk Nursingwear is unique because their fashions do not look like nursing wear from the outside, but each has hidden openings for discreet breastfeeding. Elisa Minsk Hartstein, President and Founder of Milk Nursingwear, was inspired to create a company offering fashionable nursingwear after her first daughter was born.  Elisa needed clothes that were convenient for nursing and pumping as she was breastfeeding exclusively and pumped several times a day in addition to nursing her baby after returning to work after three months.  It was then that she learned about the concept of “nursingwear” from her cousin, who sent Elisa a variety of amazing nursing tops, allowing her to nurse discreetly, and have easy access for pumping while feeling comfortable nursing in public being covered.  However, the nursing tops were not the least bit attractive orfashionable, and not suited to a professional work environment.

Despite endless searching, Elisa was unable to find nursing styles that were corporate work appropriate. She says, “I loved the ease and discretion that nursingwear provided, but needed more fashionable options.”  At that point, the idea for Milk Nursingwear was born because she knew there had to be other mothers like her that yearned for chic and professional nursing styles.

With a background in business (a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Columbia University Business School), having worked as a buyer for Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor, a marketing Manager at American Express, and with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, she set out to launch her own company – designing, manufacturing and selling fashionable clothes for nursing moms.

Milk NursingwearElisa shares some of her favorite pieces from the Milk Nursingwear collection, starting with their best seller, the Empire Scoop Neck Nursing Top.  This must-have top is available in a spectrum of colors in both short and long sleeved versions and has a five star rating from customers.  It dresses up or down with ease and allows one to nurse discreetly by lifting the empire seam to access openings.  For busy women, Milk Nursingwear is also easy to care for and machine washable friendly.  Their customer service is top notch and customers appreciate their warm and friendly approach.Another fabulous favorite is the Ruffle Hemmed Maternity and Nursing Lounge Nightgown, ideal for sleeping or lounging.  While it was designed for wear around the house, many customers have commented it is a favorite dress to wear out of the house and one customer even said she wore it to a wedding. All of these styles are flattering both on new moms as well as moms who have been nursing for years. They are comfortable and can be worn many different ways with a change of accessories. Milk Nursingwear styles are versatile as can be.

Milk NursingwearMilk Nursingwear is unique from other nursing lines in terms of style, pricing and selection. They offer a vast selection with over 60 styles of nursing tops, nursing dresses and nursing sleepwear. Style is the forefront of the brand as their fashions are those that even women who are not nursing will want to wear.  The company gets customer emails sharing how Milk styles are so chic that they plan to wear them even after they have weaned, as many do.  Elisa adds, “We do not want women to have to compromise their sense of fashion when breastfeeding. It is a time when it is in fact especially important for women to feel good about themselves and attractive and our fashions help them achieve that.”  From the outside the clothes look like regular stylish pieces, but all feature hidden openings for discreet breastfeeding. Also, affordable pricing is another plus with Milk Nursingwear since tops are $36-$46 full price, and dresses run from $49 - $62, in addition to sales and promotions.  They uniquely offer a Milk Money rewards program where customers earn 5% back on purchases, giving them dollars off subsequent purchases. It is their way of rewarding loyal customers.

Milk NursingwearMilk Nursingwear launches their Spring/Summer collection in late February/early March and Fall/Winter collection in late August/early September.  These are when they bring in their largest collections, in addition to new styles added throughout the year.  A seasonal summer best-seller is the Smocked Sleeveless Sundress, with wide bra-friendly straps and neckline for no-stress dressing.  The stretchy and comfortable smocked top simply can be lifted for nursing access.  This dress was designed for nursing, but customers share they have worn it through the entire nine months of pregnancy because it is so comfortable and easy-fitting.In coming up with ideas for their clothing designs, their head designer has over 20 years of experience in juniors and women’s fashion market. Each season she researches the latest trends in mainstream women’s fashion and adapts them for nursingwear.  “We want to make sure that our fashions are current with what is being offered in mainstream fashion – so our nursing customers are getting the latest styles. Our goal is to make Nursingwear that is so stylish and fashionable that women would want to wear it even if they were not nursing,” says Elisa.

Milk NursingwearMilk Nursingwear is best described as fresh, modern and chic.  One of our personal favorites that we love is the Infinity Nursing Top, both stylish and classy and was inspired by the hot “infinity scarves” fashion trend.  The front layers are very forgiving to help hide any immediate post-partum belly bumps and extra baby weight.  The fabric is extremely soft and lightweight, giving moms the “cover-up” they need while allowing for easy nursing access.  I can personally attest that I still wear this even after my nursing days as this top is an everyday staple.

Milk Nursingwear has experienced strong year-over-year growth, which is a testament to their product line and how much moms love their fashions once they try them. A large percent of Milk Nursingwear customers hear about the brand from a friend. Elisa’s goal is to continue designing fashionable products that help moms feel great about themselves and their decision to breastfeed.

On a personal note, Elisa is mom to four lovely children, whom she nursed each for at least a year.  For nearly eight years, she was either pregnant, nursing, or both and lived in maternity and Nursingwear for many years.  She loves running a business that helps make mothers’ breastfeeding experiences even more enjoyable and convenient.  “I loved nursing each of my children, and I am happy that my company can be part of this very special time in moms’ lives,” she shares. The full Milk Nursingwear collection is available at  They are also available in independent maternity stores, hospital based stores, and lactation centers (see list of stores under store locator on their website).  Their products make great shower gifts, new baby gifts, and birthday presents. Elisa also loves getting input and customer feedback, so feel free to contact her anytime at
