Oilo Studio

Oilo Studio

Fresh Décor Sets the Style for the Modern Nursery

Oilo StudioIntroducing Oilo Studio, a company offering a distinctive collection of high quality designer level bedding, furniture, lighting, wall art and more that feature clean, simple and sophisticated design.  Founded in 2009 by Annalisa Thomas and her mother, Dorte Anderson, Oilo Studio features clean designs with crisp lines and a modern aesthetic intended to create a serene yet bold statement in a nursery.  Their bedding is designed to coordinate with many different finishes and furniture designs.  Proud to be a family run business with all products made in the USA, Annalisa works with her mother, an interior designer, while her husband, Clayton, assists with the day-to-day business.  Oilo Studio is unique from other lines because they design with moms in mind by offering parents a chic, new solution for fashionable home décor at an affordable price.  Annalisa shares, “As a mom I’ve spent countless hours in my baby’s nursery.  I want the nursery to be a place where I can close the door and find peace with my baby.”

Oilo StudioAnnalisa was born with a love for art and design, which her parents picked up on early by enrolling her in more art classes than she could possibly count.  She enjoyed fine art but it was not until college that she found her true first love.  Annalisa attended Utah State University majoring in Graphic Arts, but when she declared it her major as a freshman, she did not have a clue what it really was.  After a year of meeting the general requirements for her major, she finally took her first graphic design class in which the assignment was designing a brochure and packaging for a “pretend” company.  Annalisa loved it and would stay up late researching her projects, which included things she had always loved – design, color and texture, all of which are deeply influenced by interior design and fashion.  She adds, “In graphic design there are pretty much two main roads you take out of school - the corporate or the advertising agency world. I chose the corporate world.”  While most corporate jobs can be mundane for designers, hers was filled with so many great design projects and she loved being involved on the business end.  Looking back, Annalisa sees it prepared her well for Oilo, as it was a manufacturing company.

Oilo StudioOilo Studio allows parents to get creative in designing the ultimate baby room, offering simple yet chic wall decals, pillows, lighting, and even furniture such as gliders.  While she knew her job would most likely let her work from home, she had always wanted her own company.  When she was pregnant with her first child five years later, she knew this was her chance to venture out on her own.  At the time she was also researching designs for her baby’s nursery and realized that although there were great designers, she wanted something a little different.  Annalisa says, “Before I knew it, a few sketches turned into fabric and fabric turned into crib bedding and Oilo was born. I quit my job and have never looked back.”  Annalisa and her husband have a son, Cohen, and a daughter, Kennedy, and are expecting a third child in May 2013.

Oilo StudioWe love the contemporary crib bedding Oilo Studio offers and selected the Modern Berries Crib Set as an Editor’s Pick.  We were delighted with the bright and refreshing sage spring green of this set against the white, but it is just as stunning in taupe and brown.  This gorgeous set includes a 100% woven cotton 2-piece bumper with a zippered slip cover for easy cleaning, along with 12 crib ties for secure attachment.  The foam filled bumper offers standing durability.  The berries motif in green adds a pop of color to the crib against the white.  Also included is a fitted cotton percale crib sheet with a modern design of lime green stripes and a 17” drop bed skirt in green.  Patterned after currant berries, this fresh motif perfectly suits a boy or girl.  Oilo’s products are designed by Annalisa and Dorte.  Aside from being her co-founder and mother, Dorte Anderson brings to Oilo over 25 years of interior design experience specializing in custom décor.  Combining that with Annalisa’s background in graphic arts, their talents complement one another, making them an exceptional team.

When it comes to designing, Annalisa is always looking at design in everyday life from nature to street grates to store packaging and shopping for clothes or her home.  “I’ve always loved design and have always been aware of it in my surroundings.  I really don’t like Oilo Studioto come up with designs as I prefer having a nice long timeline to slowly wait for ideas to come to me, but of course that’s not always realistic.”  When in a time crunch, she will simply grab a red bull and pull a late nighter with her sketchbook and computer. The brand’s label, Oilo Studio, originates from a combination of Hawaiian words, “lio” meaning small sprout and “ho’oilo” meaning the cool, rainy season.  “The Oilo name personifies the image of relaxing and enjoying the serenity of life,” Annalisa says.  Her personal favorite is the Sticks Collection for its simplicity and color.  Since its dark slate gray is practically a neutral color, one can easily accessorize with bright pink, tangy yellows or lime greens.

Oilo StudioWe also selected the Modern Berries Play Blanket as an Editor’s Pick because it is the perfect blanket to keep at home or take on the go to ensure your baby always has a clean, stylish play space wherever they are.  Mom and dad can now turn a questionable area of flooring or carpet into a familiar and sanitary play area for their baby.  Measuring 40” x 50” with a durable cotton duck surface on one side and a snuggly soft sateen finish on the other, this blanket is a must-have for every parent.  Guaranteed to be used over and over for both inside and outside of the home, you can choose from an array of stylish colors and elegant designs.  Each blanket is accented with a solid 2-inch flange along the edges to give it a finished look.  An essential for every nursery is a changing table, along with a changing pad that is easy to remove and clean.  The Diaper Changing Pad Cover and Topper by Oilo Studio is intended to keep the diaper changing station clean and stylish as the changing pad covers allow you to easily remove and wash pad toppers without taking off the entire cover.  The quick released quilted top is made with a 100% cotton duck underpinning.  Oilo StudioEasy on and easy off makes changing diapers a whole lot easier.

Celebrity parents adore Oilo Studio for its bedding, changing pads and gliders.  Rachel Zoe did her nursery in Oilo’s Cobblestone Taupe while Christina Applegate opted for Modern Berries Taupe.  Katherine Heigl has Oilo’s Freesia bedding and Roselyn Sanchez and J.R. Martinez also did nurseries in the Freesia collection.  Sienna Miller owns several Oilo pieces including the changing pad/topper in the baby’s room.  Some have the gliders in their nurseries as well.  Annalisa and Dorte just finished working on another major celebrity nursery project that will be announced in the near future and are currently involved in projects with two other celebrities.  When it comes to countries that have inspired Annalisa, she recalls studying graphic design in Switzerland for a semester and falling in love with their simple graphics.  Also, since her mom was born in Denmark, Annalisa cannot be certain if it is already in her blood, but she loves Scandinavian design.  She finds the sleek clean lines have always appealed to her.

Oilo StudioOilo Studio annually introduces new products, including new bedding collections, lighting styles and more.  Last year, they debuted a collection of gift items such as layettes, car seat canopies, play blankets and diaper change pad/toppers.  Oilo Studio also changes and introduces items based on customer demand and feedback, giving parents greater choices for creating the ideal space for their babies.  For example, since some parents do not want complete crib bedding sets, this year Oilo introduced patterned crib skirts in their signature designs.  Oilo Studio is available at many top specialty juvenile goods retailers nationwide.  Since they love working with interior designers and chic stores, Annalisa hopes Oilo Studio keeps growing in that market for the future.  To view and purchase their full collection, visit oilostudio.com.  Be sure to also follow Oilo Studio on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest for exciting updates, news and promotions.
