The Craftsman Inn

The Craftsman Inn - Calistoga While managing as innkeepers of the Wine Way Inn for many years, Gillian and Nick Kite kept their eyes on a shabby piece of property just down the street which they thought had great potential as a bed & breakfast.  In 2005, the Kites purchased the property and spent at least two years fixing and remodeling it from top to bottom, into their vision The Craftsman Inn - Calistogaof a more luxurious bed & breakfast.  Their vision was to offer what their guests loved about the Wine Way Inn, but with added luxury in providing larger rooms with Jacuzzi tubs, private porches, flat screen TVs, spa robes, and more.  As one can easily see, the inn got its name from its beautiful Craftsman architecture.  The Kites extol the Craftsman in everything from its new infrastructure and plumbing to electric wiring and heating units.  All their hard work and effort over the past two years was well worth it as they feel like proud parents of their new establishment.

The Craftsman Inn - Calistoga The Craftsman Inn differs from other bed & breakfasts’ because it is more luxurious and upscale.  The sizes of the rooms are slightly larger, and guests can choose rooms with private porches or intimate Jacuzzi tubs.  Individual temperature controls in each room also allows guests to set the air conditioning or heat to their liking.  The Craftsman also offers special touches like complimentary bottled water in addition to Sherry and home made cookies in each room.  For guests traveling with kids or friends, the Craftsman accommodates by offering rooms that can sleep up to four people, with pull out full size sleeper sofas, in addition to a queen beds.

Each of the five rooms at the Craftsman Inn are named after the mountains and cliffs surrounding Napa Valley. Rooms offer the ultimate definition of luxury as all rooms come with 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets on their queen beds, high speed wireless internet, and a flat screen TV/DVD.  For those guests seeking mere relaxation, they can easily reserve a private in-room massage.

The Craftsman Inn - Calistoga On the ground floor, the Spring room in the rear of the house provides a spacious private porch, with lounge chairs, a coffee table, and lush greens surrounding the area.  Guests can use this intimate porch for a private breakfast or to simply relax on their own time.  The entrance to the room is through the French doors on the porch, leading to a relaxing Jacuzzi bathtub.  The Spring room is also unique because it connects to the adjacent Howell room through a door.  Accommodating up to six people when adjoined, this connection is ideal for a larger group or couples with younger children who also want their own privacy.  The Craftsman Inn - Calistoga Through the connecting door is the Howell room, which is also accessible through the period sliding door in the front of the room, which locks into place.  With hardwood floors, and a spacious leather sofa for relaxing or watching a movie on the opposite flat screen TV, the Howell room is a special getaway.  The large leather sofa can be transformed into a full size sleeper to accommodate up to four in this room.  The black and white tiled bathroom floor offers period elegance, while the large steam shower soothes the senses.

Moving up the stairs towards the second floor, the spacious Palisades room in the front of the house holds original Craftsman features of the house’s 1912 heritage with its built in chest of drawers, and window seats.  A large leather sofa, which can also accommodate more guests, provides an ample sitting area in front of a flat screen TV.  The Craftsman Inn - CalistogaThe Palisades room also features a spacious tiled steam shower.  Along the same floor, the Helena room is on the side of the house, and offers a flat screen TV facing the comfy queen bed, and a lush reading chair.  The bathroom offers a Jacuzzi tub, perfect for a romantic soak after a long day of wine tasting.  The last room is the Diamond room, which is the only room to offer a private upstairs outdoor porch, with a table and chairs, for couples to linger and reminisce over a glass of wine, while enjoying the fresh, crisp outdoor air.  The Diamond room is a special treat for couples as its sparkling tiled bathroom also holds a charming corner Jacuzzi tub.

The Craftsman Inn - CalistogaLike the Wine Way Inn, the Craftsman also offers afternoon wine and a stellar breakfast.  Each morning, guests receive the works (fresh juice, homemade granola and yogurt, scones, fresh fruit) in addition to some homemade hot dishes.  We were served a delightful spinach and mushroom quiche, and country potatoes tossed with corn and diced ham.  A round of mimosas was even served in celebration of another couple’s anniversary.  Starting your day off with breakfast at an elegant dining table, while meeting other guests is an experience you will never forget.  Guests praise the luxurious rooms, gourmet breakfast, and attentive service at the Craftsman Inn.

The Craftsman Inn - CalistogaOnly at the Craftsman does Gillian offers food and wine pairing/cooking classes.  These classes are gaining popularity as guests can book classes for just two or an entire group of friends.  On the future horizon, the Craftsman looks forward to offering their guests more in terms of more rooms, a pool, and possibly a full day spa where guests can get relaxing massages, facials, and other spa treatments.

The Craftsman Inn - CalistogaNick and Gillian are originally from the United Kingdom, have three kids, and have an immense passion for food and wine.  In dividing up their time between both inns, Gillian is the main host at the Craftsman, while Nick oversees the Wine Way Inn, as well as maintenance and gardening.  Calistoga has become their home and they are devoted to sharing this with guests to make their stay a most memorable one.
