The Lavender House

The Lavender House

The Ultimate B&B Destination in Bath

For your visit to the City of Bath in England, your one and only accommodation choice should be the Lavender House.  This quaint and charming bed and breakfast continues to earn five stars from Visit Britain and provides the very best in hospitality and service.  Situated atop a hill overlooking Bath, it is just a short 20 minute walk to the city centre.  It is close enough to all the attractions and sights, but perfectly located on a quiet residential street with lush trees and gardens lining the road.  Billie is proud of her city and says, “Bath is one of the most The Lavender Houseamazing cities in the world, essentially a Georgian city with Victorian and Edwardian influences.”  Must see sights all within walking distance include The Abbey, Roman Baths and Pump Rooms, the Thermal Bath Spa and the stunning Pulteney Bridge and Weir.  The city centre offers a plethora of restaurants, bars, and independent shops to visit.  Other city highlights include The Circus, Royal Crescent, Assembly Rooms and Museum of Costume.  Since August 2007, Kevin and Billie Wilson have managed Lavender House beautifully under the proprietorship of their dear friend, Diana Wright.  The Lavender House provides unrivalled hospitality and ensures that all guests leave feeing as if they want to return, as many do.

Many guests praise Lavender House for making them feel so welcome and for the attention to detail in making each stay special.  “It is the little touches that make the Lavender House unique,” shares Billie.  From chocolates in the room or birthday cards, flowers or little gifts for special occasions to doing laundry for weary guests, there is nothing they would not do for their guests.  They even generously offer to drive guests to and from the train station if needed.  Guests are even often invited to join them for impromptu meals or barbeques.  Their favorite thing about Lavender House is meeting new people, some of whom have now become firm friends.  In terms of memorable stories, Billie remembers, “The first night we arrived here we were sitting with friends in our filthy, shifting house clothes when quite late there was a knock at the door. It was two very tired German travelers who were desperate for a room.. there was neither hot water nor any toiletries in the room..but the guests must have been happy though; they ended up staying for four nights and are now firm friends.”

The Lavender HouseIn getting to know Kevin and Billie better, you will learn that they are originally from New Zealand but relocated to London to work for Diana, a retired English school teacher.  As their friendship grew, Kevin and Billie decided to move with Diana from London to Bath to help manage the bed and breakfast house she purchased.  Originally called the Highroyd House, it was appropriately renamed Lavender House after they first planted lavender.  Lavender now flourishes today throughout the garden and along the front walkway, making it the perfect lavender house.  They each devoted themselves to providing a totally English bed and breakfast that was a “true home from home but with a little touch of luxury.”  Since the beginning, they worked hard to touch it up, from creating easier access and upgrading the gardens to providing an enchanting place to sit and relax.  In addition, all bedrooms have been re-decorated to incorporate modern conveniences without compromising the style of the house.  After re-decorating the place into a beautiful Edwardian style home, they were awarded 5 stars and a Gold Accolade after an anonymous overnight visit from the Visit Britain inspector.  They are extremely proud of Lavender House for advancing from 4 to 5 stars as it is almost unheard of.

The Lavender House has four charming rooms to choose from; the Gold Room, Rose Room, Garden Room and the Blue Room, which all come with large en-suite bathrooms.  All rooms are each individually decorated with high quality furnishings, accessories, designer wallpaper, and some antique furniture or hand carved reproductions.  “Quality mattresses, beautiful Egyptian cotton linen and plentiful pillows on all beds ensure a good nights’ sleep,” says Billie.  The Gold Room is on the first floor with gorgeous views over Bath and especially great for sunsets and city lights.  The Rose Room is a soft pink floral room with a wooden four poster bed that also offers wonderful views over the City of Bath.  This comes with a large luxurious en-suite bathroom with full size bath, shower The Lavender Houseand bidet.  The Garden Room is a double room that can actually be let as a triple room.  With its pastel floral wallpaper and calm blue hues, this lovely room overlooks the garden.  Our stay in the Blue Room was beyond wonderful as it was always kept clean and replenished daily with bottled water, coffee, tea, and biscuits.  The Blue Room is serene with its baby blue wall paper, toile printed bedspread, floral paintings, and blue accents.  The large window in front of the bed overlooks the colorful and pretty garden below.  With such lavish décor and a magnificent view, it is easy to feel right at home as soon as you walk in.  Not to mention, the bathroom is extremely spacious with a large changing area, including a walk-in shower and whirlpool bathtub.

Kevin, Billie, and Diana each bring their talents to the table in making Lavender House memorable.  Kevin and Bille have their roots in the field of hospitality with a firm understanding of the industry while Diana’s knowledge of English history and literature along with fluency in German and French makes them the perfect trio.  In addition, Billie has a passion for good food and possesses years of experience from running a catering business, creating in-house dinner parties for clients, and specializing in weddings and special occasions.  Away from work, they all love to travel and have enjoyed memorable trips together to South Africa, South America, and the Greek Islands.  Each one of them is an adventurer and loves to try new and exciting things, such as flying through forest canopies, diving with sharks, or enjoying a walking safari tracking lions.

The Lavender HouseEveryone knows that one of the best things about a B&B is the breakfast!  You will be in store for a treat when you awake to the splendid array that Lavender House has to offer.  Start your day off with a lovely assortment of fresh juices, homemade granola and yogurt, fresh fruit, cereal, and toast.  In addition, your choice of a fresh pot of tea or coffee is brought to the table.  Each guest is treated like royalty with a menu of breakfast options to choose from.  The most popular being the Traditional Full English Breakfast, it comes with two thick slices of “real” bacon, delicious sausage links, home potatoes, grilled mushrooms, tomato, and eggs of your choice.  If you have not tried bacon in England, then you have not had real bacon as its marbled fat is evenly layered along the thick cut of meat, almost reminiscent of ham.  You can feel good about eating well because Lavender House chooses to grill rather than fry their items and all ingredients are locally sourced and organic when possible.

The Lavender House has received nothing but praise on Tripadvisor ( and it is easy to see why.  The Lavender HouseKevin and Billie go above and beyond in making sure their guests are satisfied in everyway.  Their suggestions are always consciously geared towards the interests of each guest.  While there may be other places to stay in Bath, if you want a memorable, relaxing, and stellar bed and breakfast experience, Lavender House is the place for you.  If you are planning a trip to Bath, Billie says, “Don’t book anywhere but here, you can’t get better than the Best.”  For reservations please visit
