Waxing Poetic

Waxing Poetic

Charmed by Seal Insignias and All Things Literary

Waxing PoeticPatti Pagliei Simpson has been designing jewelry most of her life, but was struck with the idea of turning antique wax seal insignias into actual jewelry in 2002.  The thought of connecting the personal art of writing and letters with the act of wearing them resulted in the creation of her unique and fabulous line, Waxing Poetic.  Based in Los Olivos, California, the Flagship store offers a wide assortment of jewelry, charms, objects, candles, housewares, and more.  Celebrities like Courtney Cox, Jewel, Mischa Barton, Jane Kaczmarek, Allison Janney, Jessica and Ashlee Simpson, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, are just a few who have chosen Waxing Poetic pieces to personalize as gifts or their own keepsakes.  Waxing Poetic Jewelry is different from other jewelry designs because they truly try to channel and make beautiful markers for moments through their jewelry to allow people to be in touch with the personal and intimate.

Having been a painter, furniture maker, cook, a set and graphic designer, and so many more things from an early age, Patti is a without a doubt a creative soul.  From when she was very young, she always had an innate feeling that she would become some sort of an artist, visual interpreter and maker of things.  “I approach most things in life with imagination, and mostly really love communicating with other creative people – that is what gives me total joy,” she says.  Patti received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mason Gross School of the Arts and pursued post-graduate study at the School of Visual Arts at Cooper Union.  She studied both painting and graphic design.  Patti is currently the CEO and Creative Director while her sister, Lizanne Pagliei Hales, is the Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  Lizanne holds a degree in Advertising Design and with her tremendous business acumen, introduced Waxing Poetic to the world of celebrities and influential publications.

Patti comes from a tightly knit Italian American family where her parents allowed her to have a carefree childhood while always encouraging her to indulge in her ideas.  Patti describes her mother as a fabulous saver of all things meaningful and sacred, who has enriched every step of her life with stories, inspiration, Waxing Poeticmementoes and traditions, along with a great eye for time-worn trinkets and treasures.  She credits her father for teaching her how to fabricate things, use tools, materials, and her hands in making things.  “This duality is so prominent in my work,” Patti says.  In addition to their wide assortment of mix and match charms, Waxing Poetic also has wonderful bracelets and earrings to choose from.  We selected the Free Form Small Silver Hoops as an Editor’s Pick for its universal appeal as it makes a great everyday favorite in complimenting both casual and formal attire.  These sterling silver rounded hoops are simple yet stylish and is a jewelry must-have.

Waxing PoeticHer recent favorite is the Silhouette Portrait Girl Charm that she engraved her baby Lulu’s name onto. “So cute, I love wearing this fun representation of her every day,” she shares.  We also selected this charm as an Editor’s Pick because the classic black silhouette against the silver brings to mind such childhood nostalgia.  Waxing PoeticThis makes for a great gift to mothers who want to always wear their little girl or boy close by.  Patti is also big fan of the Fragment Bangles because they are so easy to wear and layer, and she loves the poetry on them.  Patti also adores the Remedy Bottle Pendants as they are always one of her favorite pieces to give friends because they make great conversation pieces and bring smiles.  We chose the Love Elixir Remedy for its romantic whimsical allure and daydreams of love potions.  All of their insignia and icons are like children to her and Patti can’t simply choose one as a favorite.

An idea comes to Patti when she least expects it, but she and her team work conceptually in throwing out ideas to see whether they would be fantastic as jewelry.  She often starts letting an idea brew and percolate, maybe even dream about it for a few nights, and then knows she has to start the design process to make her idea into a reality.  Waxing Poetic has a coterie of design comrades from poets and artists to designers as each person plays a part in the collections.  It is rare that anything is made by one person alone.  Waxing Poetic is best described as jewelry that is personal, like an old friend or a modern heirloom.  Patti says, “the individuals who collect, give and wear our items recognize themselves, their own histories and lore in our designs, and I think that is what makes it unique.”

Waxing PoeticA touch of fairy tale magic can be found with the Storybook Page Charms, which pulls a two-tone page from nine whimsical stories.  We love the traditional Once Upon a Time charm as that is how every fairy tale starts and is truly a tale as old as time.  With its partly torn page, this charm lets you create your own fairy tale.  For a bit of gold and black luxe contrast, the Realize True Riches Pendants in your choice of a gold key, heart, or cross against a black oval pendant with a double gold border is a daily reminder of your own riches.  While this year is coming to an end, why not commemorate the joys, trials, and riches of 2010 with the 2010 Banner Orb Charm.  This delicate charm has a banner of silver displaying ‘2010”, wrapped delicately around a pearl.  Just because the year is over, does not mean you cannot always wear it on your favorite chain as a reminder of the milestones in your life that year.

Every necklace is a personalized creation as you have the freedom and ease to select the length, style, and material of your chain to display your own charm collection.  Waxing Poetic offers a wide variety of chains in brass and sterling silver, in long and short lengths, with varying links.  At the moment, Patti loves working in mixed metals along with lots of sterling silver, brass, bronze and other textures.  Waxing Poetic retires styles each year to make room for new ideas, but the classics remain and continue to sell as long as the love remains for them.  Waxing Poetic is sold at small boutiques whom have been loyal supporters since the beginning.  Patti is hoping that the company will continue to grow and bring in more artists and generate more ideas.  Waxing Poetic is planning to launch their own candle line later this year and possibly other products that express the Waxing Poetic way.

Waxing Poetic offers such a wide variety of initial charms in various styles, designs, metals, and font, that the easiest part of making your own necklace or bracelet will be choosing the initials.  For a classic and feminine look, the Mother of Pearl Charm Monogram Charm Waxing Poeticdisplays the initial in an elegant black script against the bright white of the mother-of-pearl and hugged by silver or antiqued brass.  The Antique Brass Insignia Charm in "D" has a delicate script initial cast in a smooth yellow brass that captures the look and essence of a wax insignia.  A similar style of the wax insignia look is the sterling silver Square Insignia Charm in "A."  The initial on this charm is of a swirly serif font reminiscent of the Middle Ages and makes a distinct impression with its old world appeal.  For an edgier look, the Rivet Charm in “M” kicks it up a notch by mixing the look of brass with sterling silver.  A bold hand-hewn antique brass letter is riveted onto a signature sterling silver wax seal pendant to create a magical contrast of mixed-metal.  A delicate and smaller initial pendant is the Crest Insignia Charm in “C” featured in rose gold.   This small yet stately crest bears an initial in your choice of silver, rose, or yellow gold and looks great when paired with other charms of contrasting size and metals.

From among all her travels, Patti adores the culture, food, art and way of life in Italy the most as Renaissance art, Italian architecture and objects really inform what she does.  Patti also loves visiting their factory in Bali and considers it the most magical place on earth because it is visually stunning with a gracious culture full of artistry and quiet passion.  Waxing Poetic also has additional workshops in Bangil, East Java, where all workers are offered fair and ethical working conditions, and are paid twice the minimum wage.  The company considers their skilled craftspeople as family and also provides health and pension benefits, maternity leave, sick leave, vacation, and bonuses.  Waxing Poetic is also a strong believer in being green as they utilize recycled silver in up to 50% of their materials to lessen the impact from mining. “This innate understanding and respect for the earth is interwoven with our care for the vital craftspeople at the heart of the Waxing Poetic family,” Patti shares.  On a free day, Patti enjoys exploring the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley and being at home with her husband, baby, dog, and goats.
