Wine Way Inn

Wine Way Inn - CalistogaThe history of Wine Way Inn is that it is Calistoga’s oldest bed & breakfast inn in Napa Valley.  Originally built in 1910 as a Craftsman-style family home for Leland Stanford, it was converted to a bed & breakfast in 1978.  Even today, this historical gem continues to preserve its original architecture and period charm for its guests.  The charming owners and keepers of the Wine Way Inn are Gillian and Nick Kite, a lovely pair that has been married for close to 26 years.

Wine Way Inn - CalistogaNick and Gillian were inspired to start a bed & breakfast from their shared passion for food, wine, and meeting interesting people.  Nick, once a corporate guru with his MBA, realized that one should truly live life to their fullest when the dotcom bust changed his life.  They found Napa Valley to be the ultimate getaway, and dedicated themselves to building their bed & breakfast.

Wine Way Inn - CalistogaWine Way Inn is unique in many aspects, from its décor and architecture, to its gourmet cooking and complimentary treats (bottled water, baked goods, afternoon wine).  The inn holds beautiful craftsman architecture such as built-in glass cabinets in the Wine Way Inn - Calistogadining room and a cozy fireplace in the parlor.  It also has a stunning redwood deck in the rear that leads up to a gazebo where guests can lounge while admiring the breathtaking views of Mount St. Helena and the valley.  The nights are generally warm and the energy can be lively and engaging when guests bond and share stories.  Located just a short walk away from downtown Calistoga, guests can easily visit shops, restaurants, and spas.

Wine Way Inn - CalistogaGillian’s culinary skills have garnered much attention.  A self taught chef, she formerly ran her own catering business in the United Kingdom, and cooked professionally in hotels and restaurants throughout Britain and France.  Now, she provides professional cooking lessons for small groups at their other property, The Craftsman Inn.  Gillian possesses an innate talent for combining flavors to produce amazing dishes from surprisingly simple approaches.  She takes great care and dedication in preparing food for her guests, and will go great lengths to offer the maximum flavor payoff, but not for the sake of merely being “gourmet.”

Wine Way Inn - Calistoga One thing I absolutely love about the Wine Way Inn is their sincere attention to their guests, as they say “providing great food is a key part of building a lasting and enjoyable memory of your stay.”  The Kites pamper their guests in the evening by serving select wines that guests likely cannot find at home.  Then, each morning they serve a memorable gourmet breakfast that alone is worth the stay.  The full spread includes homemade granola and yogurt, fresh fruit, scones and muffins, and a specialty hot dish. Some of Gillian’s favorite breakfast dishes are her specialty frittatas, quiches, bread and butter pudding, sausage plait, and maple oat scones.

The Wine Way Inn has six rooms, each carefully designed with a period theme, along with a private bath.  Wine Way Inn - CalistogaThe L’occitaine toiletries in each bathroom are also a nice touch.  The Napa room is the smallest of the six, but is cozy with its slanted ceiling and navy blue and white nautical theme.  The pine bead board walls in striking white add to the quaint nautical aura of the room, while the navy blue shutters add depth.  With a cute private bathroom and a shower large enough for one, this room provides the bare necessities.  In the Rutherford room, the wall pine boards are baby blue, offset with contrasting navy blue drapes.  Wine Way Inn - CalistogaA four poster bed sits waiting with its white duvet and lush pillows.  On the other side of the spectrum, the Yountville Room has soft pink walls with warm burgundy curtains and bedding.  A large wall mirror faces the bed while a quilt handmade by the innkeeper overlooks the bed.

The St. Helena is the largest room, and has warm yellow pine board walls with pastel green curtains and cream colored bedding.  This room also provides a rich wood armoire and dresser.  Wine Way Inn - Calistoga The Oakville room has soft muted sage walls, with floral bedding and a wall sized mirror.  This room offers a touch of romance with its private outdoor patio, perfect for relaxing in the evening or morning, and its large tiled bathroom with a tub and shower.    Lastly, the Calistoga room, is likened to a romantic cottage, with its private deck and garden.  This room can only be accessed through the back garden and has French doors leading out to a private deck.  The room has soft pink walls and maroon bedding.

Nick and Gillian have shared many memories with both returning and new guests.  Wine Way Inn - CalistogaAgain and again, guests continue to praise the Wine Way Inn for their stellar homemade breakfast, unique period rooms, excellent service, and genuine advice.  Both Nick and Gillian go out of their way to understand each guest’s tastes and preferences to make their experience more personal.  Whether your next trip is a romantic getaway, birthday, honeymoon, or anniversary celebration, the Wine Way Inn is the perfect place to make that special memory.  As the oldest bed & breakfast in Napa, it remains one of the most renown for a reason.
